The Witch's Diary

An funny illustrated adventure novel for 8 to 12 year olds written in first person by an unnamed protagonist.

Three rotten boys dare each other to do stupid things outside the run down house of Mrs Avebury; an elderly woman they jokingly call a witch. Things escalate until one of the boys creeps in to steal something from her. Much later he emerges, traumatised, but holding her diary to discover his friends have run away.

The friends fall out with each other. One, our narrator, gets in serious trouble with his parents and teachers while the others accept no blame and turn against him. He vents his anger by writing and drawing in the stolen diary which, it transpires, really did belong to a witch and its unpredictable, dark magic wreaks increasing havoc on the small town.
